Nichia Reaches Settlement on PSS Patents with Corlant

Nichia reported that the company has reached a judicial settlement with Corlant, a distributor of automotive aftermarket parts under the brand of Valenti, during the proceeding at Tokyo District Court on March 19, 2020.

Under the settlement, Corlant acknowledged that the accused products fall within the scope of Nichia’s patents in relation to PSS technology. Further, Corlant agreed to cease manufacturing and selling accused products, and to pay settlement money.

Nichia filed the patent infringement lawsuit against Corlant on January 7, 2019, accursing Corlant of distributing an automotive LED position lamp that infringes Nichia’s patents JP5800452 and JP6320582 in relation to PSS technology.

PSS, Patterned Sapphire Substrate, is one of the core technologies in the field of LED chip. At present, Nichia owns over 100 patents in more than 15 countries in relation to PSS technology.

Recently Nichia filed another patent lawsuit against automotive aftermarket parts distributer IPF and claimed that the LED headlamp sold by the company infringes Nichia’s patent JP5526782 related to LED package structure. The accused product used LED jointly developed by IPF and Lextar, the Taiwan-based LED company.
