[News] Samsung Display Develops 'QuantumBlack™', a Low-Reflection, High-Durability Film for QD-OLED Monitors

News Source:

Samsung Display announced today that it has developed a new low-reflection, high-durability film that further reduces light reflectance while enhancing display durability.

Samsung Display announced the development of 'QuantumBlack™,' a low-reflection and high-durability film that reduces light reflection by 20% compared to the company's previous film and increases panel hardness to 3H. The company confirmed that this technology will be fully applied to all new QD-OLED monitor products launched this year. To highlight the unique value of this technology, Samsung Display named it 'QuantumBlack™' and recently completed trademark registration.

As a self-emissive display, QD-OLED can achieve 'True Black' by completely cutting off pixel power. However, in real-world usage environments, ambient light reflecting off the screen can make it difficult to experience true black performance. To address this, Samsung Display has been developing and applying low-reflection films since the early stages of its QD-OLED monitor business. With QuantumBlack™, introduced this year, reflectance has been further reduced by 20% compared to the company’s previous film, and the technology will be expanded across new products.

Black performance is one of the most critical specifications for gaming monitors. In gaming, accurate black levels clearly define boundaries between objects and backgrounds, creating greater depth and spatial clarity to heighten immersion. In particular, for FPS (First-Person Shooter) or survival games, this can influence gameplay by enabling clearer visibility of enemy silhouettes or item locations.

The application of QuantumBlack™ also reinforces panel durability. According to internal evaluations, applying QuantumBlack™ improved the surface hardness of the QD-OLED panel from 2H to 3H level. While displays with lower hardness can be susceptible to scratches during movement or cleaning, a 3H rating indicates a high level of strength that resists scratches even when contacted by a fingernail.

In line with Samsung Display's development of QuantumBlack™, global customers are preparing to launch monitors featuring this new technology. Notably, ASUS has launched its 'Black Shield,' Gigabyte 'Obsidian Shield,' and MSI 'Dark Armor,' each emphasizing significantly upgraded low-reflection capabilities in their new products.

According to global market research firm Omdia, the global self-emissive monitor display market is projected to more than double from 3.4 million units in 2025 to 7.6 million units by 2030. The industry expects differentiated technologies that closely reflect consumer needs, such as QuantumBlack™, Penta Tandem™, and V-Stripe, to drive market growth. Samsung Display is leading the market in the self-emissive monitor display sector, recording a 75% market share in 2025.

Brad Jung, Vice President and Head of the Large Display Marketing Team at Samsung Display, stated, "QuantumBlack™ technology is a premium solution that further strengthens QD-OLED’s inherent advantage of delivering deep and perfect black, providing a differentiated level of immersion while also improving panel durability." He added, "We will continue to introduce innovative technologies to create new user experiences across gaming and content environments."
