Scientists achieve new record in efficiency of blue OLEDs

It’s reported that University of Florida materials science and engineers have achieved a new record in efficiency of blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), which is a step forward towards better and efficient lights. Because blue is essential to white light, the advance helps overcome a hurdle to lighting that is much more efficient than compact fluorescents, but can produce high-quality light similar to standard incandescent bulbs.

LED lighting could reap $1.8T savings, RPI is concentrating on develop LED new apps

According to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI)’s recent study, the emerging solid-state lighting that replaces incandescent and fluorescent bulbs with LED can reap enormous savings in cost, natural resources and pollution. The firm claims that over the next 10 years, savings of more than $1.8 trillion will eliminate the need to burn almost a billion barrels of oil in power plants that would otherwise produce 10 gigatons in the carbon dioxide emissions.

New Measurement of LED Brightness and Color

The researchers from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have developed a new, economical method for measuring the optical properties of high power LEDs to allow LED lighting manufacturers to obtain accurate, reproducible, and comparable measurements of LED brightness and color. Neon Sign Goes Green with LED Lighting

Recently, the electric utility completed replacing the sign's old neon illumination with LED lights that consume nearly 90 percent less energy, last longer, and require less maintenance. Visible to drivers along Interstate 88, the old signage previously used 2,618-watt neon lights, but now generate the same brightness using 323-watt LEDs. Because LEDs also last longer than neon lights and need to be replaced less frequently, ComEd expects to save another 20 percent in annual maintenance costs.

European researchers developed new flexible OLED element

It’s reported that researchers working in the European ROLLED project have developed a flexible OLED element that can be mass produced using roll-to-roll printing technology. The OLED elements can be used to add value to product packages. The new method is considerably cheaper than the traditional manufacturing method.
