Compound Photonics Releases World’s Smallest Optical Engine for Micro LED Smart Glasses

Compound Photonics (CP), a provider of compact high-resolution microdisplay solutions for AR and MR applications introduced a compact, high brightness 1080p optical engine reference design that fits into a volume under 3 cubic centimeters (3cc). The product is optimized for CP’s 0.26-inch Micro LED Integrated Display Module (IDM) with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 resolution and 3.015μm pixel, which will accelerate development of AR/MR smart glasses.

The 0.26-inch Micro LED IDM was jointly developed by Compound Photonics and Plessey through their partnership revealed in October 2019. Now the new compact engine will further push the progress of Micro LED-based AR/MR smart glasses. Compared to other engine designs, the prototype of CP’s new optical engine demonstrate two times brightness.

CP noted that it is currently scheduling demos for this new engine and the reference design will be available for customers to license.

Andrew Shih, Compound Photonics’ Marketing and Business Development Manager, said, “With the release of this reference design, system integrators, ODMs, and OEMs will have a tested and validated high-performance full optical/display subsystem solution that simplifies integration of pre-qualified microdisplay, optical engine and waveguide combinations into consumer AR glasses, thereby reducing development effort and accelerating time-to-market.”
