Detroit and Philadelphia Upgrade to LED Streetlights

Two U.S. cities Detroit and Philadelphia have recently announced plans of upgrading to LED streetlights, according to recent U.S. media reports.

Detroit will be replacing streetlights in the East side of the city. It is believed that less than half of the city’s 880,000 streetlights are functional, according to an AP report. The city mayor Mike Duggan and lighting authority executive director Odis Jones have outlined the plan of upgrading to 150W streetlights. Authorities estimate the city’s neighborhood streetlight installation project will be completed by 2015.

Philadelphia city authorities have also announced plans of injecting US$ 850,000 into upgrading to LED streetlights, according to a report by local media Philly.com. Funding for the project will be allocated from the US$ 4.95 million Automated Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) Funding Program grant that the city recently received. The remaining funds will be deployed to improve other traffic and road related facilities, according to Philadelphia Streets Department.
