Iran Applies LEDs in Skin Treatment

News Source:

LEDs are being considered as an alternative dermatology treatment to replace the more costly laser lights in Iran, according to a report by Mehr News Agency.

So far laser light treatments and other good quality light treatments have transformed certain ophthalmology and dermatology treatments, explained Gholamreza Esmaili, a faculty member of Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

But there are certain restrictions and higher costs involved in laser light sources, he added.

Cheaper LED light sources have been introduced for skin and hair treatments, due to its larger application surfaces.

LEDs are already being applied to help heal wounds, including those found in chronic injuries, skin burns, hair loss, and minor injuries resulting from radiation therapy.

“LED light source quickly privileged position in the photodynamic therapy of malignant and benign skin lesions,” Esmaili stressed. Current skin cancer treatment for cancerous and precancerous skin lesions are already using LEDs combined with optical sensors to treat skin cancer stem cells, Actinic Keratosis, as well as benign lesions including acne and skin rejuvenation.
