LG Combines Bed with Transparent OLED to Realize Unparalleled Viewing Experience

After the release of transparent OLED, LG Display has expanded this product to everyday applications. At CES 2021, LGD showcased Smart Bed with the combination of bed and transparent OLED. By pushing a button, the screen comes up from the foot of the bed in order to achieve unparalleled viewing experience.

According to LGD, transparent OLED does not need backlight source. It can use its advantage of self-emitting, and the transparency can increase to 40%. Yet, the transparency of transparent LCD is only 10%. Thus, like glass, transparent OLED can offer clear image quality. In fact, LGD has developed transparent OLED commercial applications for a while. During the CES 2021 online exhibition, various new applications of transparent OLED have been the major display of LGD.

Take subway for example. Adopting transparent OLEDs with high transparency as subway windows can allow passengers to enjoy the beautiful scenery outside. Besides, subway lines and regional information can be offered. For another example, in sushi restaurant, with a 55-inch transparent OLED between customers and chef, customers can order through built-in touch display. When waiting for the food, they can use the transparent OLED to watch programs such as sports events. Thus, new dining experience can be offered, and pandemic prevention can be achieved.

More interestingly, among the various applications, “Smart Bed” that uses a 55-inch transparent OLED has attracted the most attention. By pushing a button, the transparent OLED rises from the foot of the bed to provide TV programs or other information (such as weather, temperature and time). Meanwhile, the screen can also act as a speaker. Thus, the space of installing TV and stereo in the bedroom can be saved, and the entire screen can be easily moved to other places of the house.

According to LGD, the technical advantages of transparent OLED can be fully adopted in fields such as shopping center, architectural decoration, autonomous vehicle and airplane. The market demand for these fields is growing. This will change the form of the original display and is expected to be the next-generation display mainstream.
