Auckland Transport has begun New Zealand’s most ambitious LED replacement program. It is replacing 44,000 high pressure sodium (golden yellow light) street lights with energy efficient LED luminaires. Auckland Transport owns more than 100,000 street lights, approximately one third of the country’s total lighting stock.

On the occasion of the forthcoming World Fair, Milan has taken the decision to become the first major Italian city to upgrade its road lighting to LED technology. The majority of over 140,000 luminaires were produced by the Italian luminaire manufacturer AEC Illuminazione and are equipped with the modern Optotronic 3DIM light management system from Osram. Royal Philips, the global leader in lighting, has launched a new technology enabling city authorities to retrofit existing LED street lights with the first of its kind Philips CityTouch connector node, a ‘plug &play’ system that uses the cellular network to connect LED street lights from any manufacturer for remote management by Philips CityTouch software.

Kent, a city located in Washington State, U.S., will be spending US$ 2.6 million to retrofit 2,600 streetlights with LEDs, reported Kent Reporter.

Royal Philips, the global leader in lighting, has been selected by the city of Szczecin in Poland to renew its street lighting system with LED technology. By September 2015, Philips will replace 5,000 existing street lights with new LED luminaires, reducing the city’s total energy bill by EUR 360,000 per year. The project is executed within “SOWA – energy efficient street lighting” run by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Poland.

Northumberland, a northern county in UK has announced plans of investing £25 million (US $36 million) in a LED streetlight upgrade project, reported ChronicleLive.

Urban streets will soon be lined with safer, cheaper, more efficient LED (light-emitting diode) lighting thanks to an accelerated funding model, said Simon Bridges, Transport and Energy and Resources Minister.

ComEd announced today that it has begun a pilot program to deploy smart, energy-efficient LED streetlights in two Chicago suburbs, Bensenville and Lombard. Through this pilot, ComEd is replacing approximately 800 ComEd-owned fixtures in Bensenville and Lombard combined.

Calgary, located in Alberta, Canada plans to launch the second phase of its LED streetlight retrofit project to replace high pressure sodium lights, according to a report by CBCnews.

R20 Regions for Climate Action, Lighting Science Group, and Pegasus Capital Advisors announced today that they have installed an initial set of 52 LED streetlights in Brazil. The well-attended ceremony last Saturday night in Nova Friburgo illuminated the city’s central square. The group and their other local partners hope to implement large-scale street lighting projects across Brazil by minimizing the upfront cost of installing new LED streetlights, and saving over 50% of previous energy usage.

Essex County Council in UK will be initiating a pilot LED streetlight project next year, according to a report by Cambridge News.

Residents in Dorset County, UK complained new LED streetlights being installed in certain areas in the county have been too bright, while others were concerned with the lack of overnight lighting, according to a BBC report.

Pemco Holdings, LLC (Pemco), a leading investor and developer of energy efficiency projects, in partnership with Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority (MRRA), today announced the completion of the Brunswick Landing LED Street Lighting Improvement Project at the former Naval Air Station in Brunswick, Maine, U.S. The project, which pioneered the use of dimming controls on public street lighting in the U.S., includes the upgrade of 650 street and area lights with new LED fixtures and radio frequency-enabled control and monitoring systems.
