The Marvel Food and Deli which opened its doors early in June 2009, is the first commercial new construction in the U.S. to be outfitted exclusively with LEDs (light-emitting diodes). The 16,000 square foot supermarket and deli is situated on a 43,000 square foot lot and utilized LED's for both interior and exterior lighting.

Russia’s Economy Minister Thursday announced that Russia plans to ban the production and sale of incandescent light bulb from Jan. 1, 2014, in a move designed to reduce energy consumption, according to an article on Reuters.

The world’s largest solar powered footbridge was recently opened to the public in Brisbane’s Central Business District in Australia. The bridge, which has been described as looking like knitting needles, is not only one of the longest footbridges, but also features a sophisticated LED lighting scheme that is powered by the sun and can produce a number of different lighting effects.

One of California's largest state utilities, Southern California Edison (SCE), is lighting up the night with solar technology at its San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). To illuminate its main employee parking areas, Edison is equipping the site with solar-powered LED lights from Carmanah Technologies.

Lunera Lighting, a designer, manufacturer, and marketer of next-generation digital LED lighting technology, is set to begin selling its premium products of ultra-thin, energy efficient LED light panel fixtures. The company will initially target the commercial general lighting market. Lunera was founded and is led by a broad range of top industry influencers, lighting physicists, engineers, artisans, and marketers. Lunera began shipping products during the fourth quarter of 2009.

Larson Electronics’ magnalight.com released the LED10W-9S 90 watt LED emitter light. Housed in cast aluminum, nine 10 watt LEDs are packaged within individual reflectors, generating 7,200 lumens, while drawing only 8.5 amps on 12 volts. The LED10W-9S LED emitter light

OSRAM’s LED technology contributes to the energy efficiency of Volkswagen’s L1 concept car presented at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA). The vehicle, which according to Volkswagen can go into production in 2013, has headlights that are equipped with new OSRAM Joule JFL2 LED systems and matching reflectors. The LED modules take care of the dipped and main beam functions and consume far less energy than conventional headlamps.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced Thursday that the Bright Tomorrow Lighting Prize (L Prize) competition has received its first entrant, a product from Philips Electronics. Philips has developed, manufactured and will bring to market an LED replacement for the common 60-Watt incandescent light bulb.
