Students enrolled in Designing with Light at the University of California, Davis this semester will be competing in the 10th Annual Luminaire Design Competition this spring. The students must create original luminaire prototypes for outdoor pathways using an energy-efficient LED module manufactured by LEDLab using Seoul Semiconductor's Acrich2 AC-LED module.

At the Integrated Systems Europe exhibition in Amsterdam (Feb. 4-6, 2014) Shenzhen Dicolor Optoelectronics presented their new M-Series LED display for the first time. It is Dicolor’s first curved curtain screen for stage applications.

San Diego announced today that it will illuminate its downtown district with GE Lighting’s intelligent lighting system, including LED street lighting, making it the first city in the United States to adopt GE’s LightGrid™ technology. The new system, set to be in place by spring of this year, will offer improved and energy-efficient lighting that will save the city more than a quarter-million dollars in energy costs each year.

Veeco Instruments announced that McGill University in Montréal, Québec, Canada has ordered Veeco’s new GENxplor™ R&D Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) System for their Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, as part of a research grant from Canada’s Foundation for Innovation.  The Veeco GENxplor is a fully integrated system that deposits high quality epitaxial layers on substrates up to 3” in diameter and is ideal for cutting edge compound semiconductor research on a wide variety of materials including arsenides, nitrides and oxides.

The new Oslon Compact infrared light-emitting diode (IRED) from Osram Opto Semiconductors closes the gap between high-power and low-power IREDs. It offers high output in a very small package, barely larger than the chip itself, and it can be used for applications such as surveillance, digital image processing, 3D measurement, pattern recognition and gesture detection.

The Graphene Research Centre (GRC) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Faculty of Science and the world’s leading chemical company BASF have partnered to develop the use of graphene in organic electronic devices, such as organic light emitting diodes (OLED). TCP International Holdings LTD, the parent company of Ohio-based Technical Consumer Products, Inc. (“TCP”), announced it entered into a patent license agreement with Philips. This agreement provides TCP with access to Philips’ LED-related patents for certain LED luminaire and bulb technologies. As part of this agreement, the two companies have agreed to settle and dismiss the patent infringement lawsuit that was pending in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.

Spanish Architect and Designer Roque Pena Pidal is the 3rd prize winner of the 2013 CLU Foundation Contest for his project 10577 Rays in Helsinki. The jury selected his project because it uses light as an event and it would bring people together. His proposal to have an assembly of reflectors to make the winter solstice as bright as the summer solstice would help the population by increasing their serotonin levels. It is created for a specific location and resembles a big public event.

At nearly 8 million pixels and 8,500 square feet, the recently installed LED spectacular at 1552 Broadway Avenue, supplied by S|N|A, LLC, is the highest-resolution video display in the history of Times Square.

At Lighting Japan 2014 in Tokyo Big Sight, OLED industry insiders of have noted that there is still a long way to go before the technology can become mature enough to compete with LEDs.

Philips LED Lighting Campus in Chengdu that has been closely watched by the industry was opened today, in the western campus of the Chengdu High-tech Industrial Development Zone (Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province).
