Indian Power Ministry to Sell LED Bulbs to Households for Less Than US $1

News Source:

India’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) announced selling LED bulbs to households at very low prices, according to a report by The Economic Times.

Through a joint venture the two government agencies will be working closely with electricity distribution companies (discoms) “to develop a business model under which EESL procures LED bulbs in bulk and sells them to households at Rs. 10 (US $0.16),” stated the official press release.

"The discoms then repay EESL, over a period of five to eight years from the savings that accrue due to use of this energy efficient lighting technology," it added.

Under an MoU between EESL and the Andhra Pradesh government, EESL has procured 2 million LEDs last week. The lowest LED retail bulb price quote offered so far has been Rs. 0.20, the statement added.

Under a MoU between EESL and the Andhra Pradesh government, EESL last week completed the procurement of two million LEDs, the statement said.

The ministry aims to provide families living in poverty with LED lights, and the Energy Conservation Mission's Demand Side Efficient Lighting Program (DELP) launched by the Indian ministry will be covering 3.7 million households with affordable LED lights.
