Indian City Varanasi Rolls Out LED Program

India’s Power Minister Piyush Goyal announced a massive LED upgrade program in the Northern holy city Varanasi, which is located in the State Uttar Pradesh, according to The Hindu and other media reports.

Two initiatives the Domestic Efficient Lighting Program (DELP) and LED-based Smart Streetlight programs will be rolled out at the same time, reported The Financial Express.

The central and Uttar Pradesh governments, in association with the state-run Energy Efficiency Services will be distributing 1.3 million LED bulbs to 200,000 consumers, wrote Zeenews.

EESL together with the Uttar Pradesh state government will be replacing an estimated 36,077 streetlights with LEDs, replacements also cover retrofitting lights at 84 ghats with LEDs over a period of three months, according to The Hindu and The Times of India.

By promoting LED lights across the nation, the Indian government aims to reduce energy usage by 10,000 MW during peak hours.

““With energy-efficient LED lights, demand of electricity in Varanasi will be down by 45 MW and lead to savings to the tune of INR 680 million (US $10.64 million),” said Goyal.
