UK Department of Energy and Climate Change Offers Enterprises in Total US$ 6.8M LED Lighting Subsidies

The UK Department of Energy and Climate Change announced in late January awardees of its second Electricity Demand Reduction (EDR) Pilot auction.

In total 24 leading companies and 37 individual projects that were awarded collectively GBP 4.74 million (US $6.81 million) to upgrade their lighting to more efficient LED lights in a move to save 23,307 kW of winter peak capacity.

The weighted average price per bid for the auction was GBP 203/kW.

The government’s decision to subsidize big businesses, such as Sainsbury GBP 830,000 to install LED lights with tax payers’ money to reduce risks of blackouts during winter season has attracted criticism from British media The Telegraph.

The Telegraph report questioned the UK government’s decision to cut subsidies to average households to improve energy efficiency.
