Ontarian City Switches 5,000 Streetlights to LEDs

Cornawall, a city in eastern Ontario, Canada, is expected to complete the upgrade of 5,000 LED streetlights by the end of 2016, reported Seaway News.

Aged sodium vapor streetlights, including orange and yellow ones will be replaced by LED fixtures which cost the city CAD $3 million (US $2.3 million).

John St. Marseille, the infrastructure manager of Cornwall, said that the LED streetlights look more like daylight comparing to the conventional ones.

The benefits of the LED streetlights upgrade include the great energy saving and the low maintenance cost. Meanwhile, the prolonged lifetime of LED fixtures are also favored by the authorities. In comparison, LED lights can last as long as 20 years while conventional fixtures have only six years.

Aside from streetlights, the city is also upgrading traffic lights to LEDs. “Everyone is going in this direction. It’s the way to go – even in your home,” said St. Marseille.
