Apple Reportedly Building a New Facility in Taiwan for Micro LED

Apple is currently constructing a new facility in Taiwan, next to Apple’s Taoyuan plant opened in 2015, reported Taiwan’s Wealth Magazine. According to the report, Apple is building the third plant in Taiwan which is scheduled to be finished in December 2019. Many believe that the new facility, like the old ones, is for Micro LED.

Taiwan has been a key place for Apple in developing Micro LED technology where the iPhone maker strategically collaborated with local supply chain. LEDinside covered that Apple was said to begin Micro LED production in small amount for the Apple Watches in 2017 in the Taoyuan plant, which some called the “Secret Laboratory.” Apple also reportedly cooperated with Taiwan’s TSMC to develop applications with silicon-based technology for tackling Micro LED manufacture bottlenecks. Then in 2018, Apple was rumored to visit chip maker Epistar and panel producer AUO in Taiwan.

Apple’s Taiwan facility is adjacent to the plants of AUO and TSMC, both Apple’s significant partners for Micro LED development, enabling easier liaison between the new Micro LED facility and partners.

Last week, Bloomberg once again reported that Apple will debut Micro LED-based AR glasses to pair with its new 5G iPhone in 2020. Apple is said to be ready for launching Micro LED products soon after a long development journey.
