ITRI and ATD of Taiwan Receive UL Safety Certificates

Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and Advanced Thermal Devices (ATD) Inc. have recently received the safety certifications offered by UL Taiwan. The government-backed ITRI was awarded the certification for an alternate current LED module, while ATD was awarded for an LED streetlight.

ITRI is offered safety requirements included in UL Subject 8750 draft for reference in the development of the module. The subject which was drafted in 2005 by UL, the No.1 electrical-appliance safety standard setter in North America, is based on full-fledged standards regulating general lighting equipment, and will likely become a guide for global lighting buyers once it becomes a formal standard.

Among all the certificate applications UL Taiwan has received in lighting field, applications for certification on LEDs have account for half, according to Ralph Tang, general manager of UL Taiwan, suggesting that LEDs have become more and more generally adopted.

According to a Taiwan-based market research institute, Taiwan has been second to Japan with a 26% market share in the global LED market. And the LED revenue of the island is expected to grow approximately 20% than last year at NT $74 billion (US$2.1 billion at US$1:NT$34) in 2009, according to the research institute.
