Apple launches its LED Cinema Displays

It’s reported that Apple has started shipping early orders for its 24-inch LED Cinema Display. The new screen looks strikingly similar to the current-generation iMac and is about half as thick.

The $899 LCD earns its namesake through an LED backlight that reduces power consumption and eliminates toxins while also improving the image quality of the display itself by producing more uniform lighting. It also represents Apple's first display to use DisplayPort, which both reduces the size of the cable and supports limited two-way signals. The new Cinema Display currently requires one of Apple's new MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro systems and serves as a complete display dock for these portables, providing 2.1-channel audio, an iSight webcam, a three-port USB hub and a MagSafe power connector for charging the notebooks.
