The HKTDC Hong Kong International Lighting Fair opened with 1,788 exhibitors from 31 countries and regions. The LED Lighting Zone has attracted 440 exhibitors offering a range of LED lighting products. Companies from Belize, the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States and the United Kingdom are taking part in the zone.

Nan Ya Photonics Inc. (NPI), a subsidiary of Taiwan-based Formosa Plastics Group, will form a strategic alliance with Epistar Corp. to tap the LED market, according to Taiwan Economic News.

Veeco Instruments Inc., announced that Sanan OptoElectronics of China has placed multiple tool orders for Veeco`s TurboDisc Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) Systems to expand their manufacturing capacity of high brightness light emitting diodes (HB-LEDs).

Lunera Lighting, a designer, manufacturer, and marketer of next-generation digital LED lighting, is now selling its ultra-thin, energy-efficient LED fixtures to the commercial general lighting market.

Tyntek Corp, a Taiwan-based LED chipmaker, recently said it is seeking to acquire its local rival Ubilux to expand its output of LEDs for panel backlighting, according to an article on Taipei Times. The acquisition will make Tyntek Taiwan’s third-largest LED chipmaker, after Epistar Corp and Optotech Corp, the report said.

Nu Horizons Electronics has signed a distribution agreement with Sharp Microelectronics Europe for the UK and Nordic territories. Nu Horizons currently distributes Sharp's electronic components in North America. The new deal marks the distributor's first major LED, optoelectronics and display module franchise in European markets.

The new LED-based BeoVision 10 from Bang & Olufsen is a slim, fully integrated TV solution with a classic Bang & Olufsen identity developed specifically for wall placement.  

Lite-On Technology and Everlight Electronics, two of the major LED providers based in Taiwan, are reportedly to be supplying SMD LEDs to Korea’s Samsung and LG from the fourth quarter this year. The two companies will supply LEDs mainly for backlights of 46/47- and 52/55-inch TVs to the two Korean TV makers, according to the report.

MH&W International has added new TP-S3LS ultra-low silicone gap fillers to its line of thermal interface materials. TP-S3LS pads contain less than 50 parts per million of silicone while providing 3.0 W/mK of themal conductivity between hot components and their heat sinks.

Scarlet Knights fans this season are being treated to a state-of-the-art, high definition video display at Rutgers Stadium. Daktronics Inc. recently installed the new HD video display at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. 

Rutgers is currently in the midst of a $102 million expansion of the stadium to increase its seating capacity to 56,000. The LED displays are part of that expansion. Last season, three Daktronics ribbon displays were installed along the fascia of the stadium.

Philips and Acuity Brands, Inc. announced today that they have entered into a license agreement allowing Acuity Brands to access Philips’ LED-based patent portfolio. Philips makes its patent portfolio for LED systems and controls available via a licensing program to third parties in order to foster industry growth.

AIXTRON AG today announced the delivery and qualification of multiple CRIUS MOCVD systems at Neo-Neon, a major customer in PR China. The world’s first and only OLED lighting design conference is scheduled to take place in Boston (December 2-3) this year. Over 100 lighting design professionals are expected to attend the conference.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors announced it has developed new transparent OLED prototypes which are only a few hundred micrometers thick and do not need separate encapsulation. The samples have a luminous area of 210 cm² and are already showing the enormous potential of OLED light sources.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded the ENERGY STAR® qualification to Renaissance Lighting Inc. on seven more of its newest 4-inch all-white solid-state LED downlight fixtures. Earlier this month, 11 of the company’s all-white 7-inch downlights became the first to receive the coveted ENERGY STAR qualification.

Linear Technology announces the LT3743, a synchronous step-down DC/DC converter designed to deliver constant current to drive high current LEDs. Philips Lumileds announced today that it is the first power LED manufacturer to publicly publish LM-80 test report data for use by luminaire manufacturers evaluating the merits of using different LEDs in their solid-state lighting solutions. The data clearly demonstrates that lumen maintenance performance exceeds ENERGY STAR® requirements by a wide margin as well as documenting lumen maintenance performance under various conditions. The test report is posted on the company’s web site www.philipslumileds.com.

Prof. Hwung-Hweng Hwung, the Senior Executive Vice President of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) - Taiwan, on behalf of NCKU, signed a joint venture agreement with a privately owned Taiwan Nitride Material Inc. led by its chairman Mr. H.H. Chang, for the production of aluminum nitride (AlN). Both parties agreed to invest a total of NT$ 30 million (US$ 932,000) for research and development of AlN, a semiconductor material widely used for heat radiation and insulation in microelectronics and optoelectronics.
