LED Manufacturers Urge Government to Scrap Nuclear Power as Alternative Energy Source

The debate over the construction of Taiwan’s fourth nuclear power plant has been heating up. Alternative energy manufacturers have been eager to voice their opinions, urging the government to reconsider nuclear power as an energy source for the country, according to a recent article by the Economic Daily News.

Those who switch to LED energy efficient products can receive a 30 percent tax deduction, said Epistar Chairman B.J. Lee, who encourages companies as well as citizens to make the switch. Delta Electronics Chairman Yancey Hai called for companies to cut their own energy consumption and for the government to set up stricter energy consumption standards.

Lighting accounts for 29.4 percent of the electric bill in the average Taiwan household according to statistics gathered by Taiwan Power Company, said Lee. The percentage can be cut dramatically if everyone switches to LED lighting. LED manufacturers have previously encouraged the government to provide subsidies as a bid to encourage consumers to buy LED products. However, due to the recent critical financial state of the government, manufacturers are now urging the use of tax incentives to sway consumers.
