City, Progress Energy plan to test LED streetlights

It’s reported that Progress Energy and the city of Raleigh would complete the installation of LED streetlights downtown as part of a test of the lighting technology.

Nine streetlights in front of Progress Energy's corporate headquarters downtown are being converted to LED fixtures. The lamps were developed by Durham-based Cree Inc.. The study will allow Progress Energy and the city to test the use of LED technology for street lighting. It will help the company and the city evaluate which technologies are most efficient and cost-effective before they make large investments, Progress Energy said. LED fixtures typically last longer, require less maintenance and run more efficiently than traditional lighting fixtures.
