Unity Opto to Focus on Lighting Market in 2011

Taiwan LED packager Unity Opto will focus its sales on lighting market in 2011 after securing stable customer base in backlight market. According to Corporate chairman, C.H. Wu, the company`s lighting operation would rake in revenue of around NT$2-2.5 billion (US$66-83 million at US$1:NT$30) in 2011, up from NT$1 billion (US$33 million) for 2010 to account for 20% of the company`s total sales, up from 2010`s 15%.

Taiwan Researches Glowing Bio-LED Trees to Replace Street Lamps

According to a research from the Academia Sinica and the National Cheng Kung University in Taipei and Tainan, glowing bio-LED trees could replace street lamps. Researchers have implanted glowing , sea urchin shaped gold nanoparticles, known as bio LEDs, inside the leaves of a plant. The new nanoparticles could replace the electricity powered street light with biologically powered light that removes CO2 from the atmosphere 24 hours a day.

Delta Electronics Acquired Foreign Buyers’ Orders

Reportedly, Taiwan Delta Electronics has acquired orders from major foreign buyers for LED lighting products, and it expects LED lighting sales to increase 10 fold in 2011. According to an interview from the Central News Agency, Roland Chiang, director of Delta Electronics' solid-state lighting division, said the company has generated large sales in Japan, the United States, Europe and China for its LED lighting products in less than two years since it entered that field.

Sino-American Silicon May Attempt to Buy GT‘s Sapphire Wafers for LED Sales Promotion

As report goes, Taiwan’s biggest manufacturer of silicon ingots, Sino-American Silicon Products Inc., plans to buy furnaces that GT Solar will build to grow sapphire ingots to promote sales related to LED manufacturing. Unity Opto’s LED backlighting products in global market would have a 15% share in 2011

It is estimated that Unity Opto Technology revenues for 2010 would reach NT$7 billion (US$228 million), up 75% from 2009, and went up to NT$12 billion, up 71.4% in 2011. Polytronics sees thermal conductive boards for LED backlights as a key growth driver

Recently, Circuit protection device maker Polytronics Technology estimated its sales in 4Q10 to decrease 15%, but it would be a smaller drop compared to in the same time last year. In October, the company’s consolidated revenues was NT$106 million (US$3.5 million), down 15.6% on month but up 17.3% on year. In the first ten month of 2010, its consolidated sales were NT$1.17 billion, up 46.5% from the same period of 2009.
