In 2009, Blue LEDs with red and green phosphors may become mainstream for TV-use BLUs

With costs for LED backlights using a mix of red, green and blue LEDs remaining high, LED industry players are considering using a combination of blue LEDs with red and green phosphors for TV-use backlights. In 2009, such designs may become popular.

Recently, LED players indicated that large-size high-end TV applications which emphasize high color saturation are likely to continue developing R, G, B LED backlighting, whereas mainstream TV applications will head toward using red and green phosphors with blue LEDs in order to compromise between price and color performance. The technology is still able to achieve an around 90% NTSC color gamut while allowing lighter, thinner and more cost competitive BLUs.
