Direct-type Backlight Technology in Lighting leads to Price Drop in Modules

With the rapid increase in LED lighting demands, LED manufacturers are continuing to develop module products with lower cost and simpler designs. Manufacturers have taken advantage of past direct-type backlight designs that use package components with few LEDs and include secondary optic lens, which allows for a wider luminosity angle and reduces the need for light guide plates. Taiwanese LED package manufacturer Edison and large Korean manufacturer Samsung have launched new solutions that use panel light design.
Samsung’s newest LED module product with secondary optic lenses has changed from the past method of only using LED package components. Increasing secondary optic lens design can effectively decrease lamp and module thickness, as well as increase luminosity angles similar to direct-type backlight that uses LED package components with secondary optic lens design.
Samsung pointed out that their 250mmx259mm product only uses 32 LED components and is designed to replace the traditional T5 and T8 lamps. The use of medium powered LED components increases light source homogeneity and luminosity while also reaching better consistency through secondary optic lenses. This is conducive towards slenderizing lamp design.
Edison in 2014 also released new lighting application products that incorporated direct-type backlight light source concepts. Package components with secondary optic lenses can increase luminosity angles and create a more even light distribution in combination with diffuser plates. Direct-type tube lighting module design has shifted to panel lighting which reduces the amount of LED components used. Products with 50 LED components or less can surpass 3000 lumens.
