Mexican Software Company Sisoft Li-Fi Transmission Reaches 10Gbps

A Mexican software development company Sisoft has caught up with Scottish research team headed by Harald Haas in achieving 10Gbps Internet data transmission using Visible Light Communications (VLC) aka LiFi, according to an Engineering and Technology Magazine report.

The report noted Sisoft has been able to transmit audio, video and Internet data using light emitted by LED lamps.

One advantage of Li-Fi over Wi-Fi is it is more difficult to hack the signal, and since it relies on light waves instead of radio waves for transmission they are suitable for hospital applications where there are radiation apparatuses.

“Currently in Mexico the highest transfer rate is 200 megabytes per second. Just to get an idea, with Li-Fi you could quickly download an entire HD movie in just 45 seconds,” said Arturo Campos Fentanes, CEO of Sisoft.

The company partnered up with researchers from Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM) to vamp up the VLC systems to achieve five times the original transfer speed of 2Gbps to 10 Gbps.
