Apple Announces LED Backlit Pro Display XDR at WWDC 2019

Rumors about Apple said that the company will launch Mini LED products in the second half of 2019. Nevertheless, at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference 2019, Mini LED products have not showed up. Instead, Apple presented a 32-inch HDR display, Pro Display XDR which adopts direct LED backlight.

Pro Display XDR is a 32-inch 6K LCD monitor featuring a resolution of 6,016*3,384, 1,600 nits peak and 1,000 nits sustained brightness and a contract rate of 1,000,000:1. These characteristics were achieved by using a direct LED backlighting system including 576 blue LED arrays which are monitored by 12 controllers to perform local dimming.

Despite that structure of Pro Display XDR is very similar to Mini LED, size of the LEDs used in the produce is 600 μm, which does not meet the Mini LED standard of below 100 μm. Thus, many considered it “Mini LED-like backlight design.”

According to industry sources, LEDs applied in the display were from Japanese LED maker Nichia, while backlight solution was provided by Radiant Opto-Electronics.
