Sarnoff Starts a New Company to Focus on LED Applications

Sarnoff Corp. has launched a new company to focus on the thriving LED lighting market. Lightscape Materials Inc., which is the name of the new venture, has received $3 million in Series A funding from Wisepower Co. Ltd. and Foosung HDS Co. Ltd with the two companies joining Itochu Corp. which is an early stage investor and distributor in Asia for Lightscape Materials.

The new company will be dedicated to the developing and marketing of new lighting applications including LED-relevant components and other phosphor light products.

Lightscape will leverage 60 years of expertise from the first color TV phosphors developed under RCA to diverse applications such as EL, PDP, bio-medical, security, and LED applications.

As a new source of light, LED has already found its way in backlit handheld LCD devices such as cell phones and PDAs. And its application in large LCD displays in place of cold cathode fluorescent lamp technology is also worth expectation in the future.

The high power efficiency of LED will benefit the general lighting applications with the LED lamps consuming much less electricity per lumen than traditional incandescent bulbs.
