Altair Engineering, parent company of LED lighting developer ilumisys, has been granted a judgment and permanent injunction against High Tech Global Group Co., Ltd. (HTGG), a Taiwanese manufacturer. Altair brought action against the company when it discovered HTGG was infringing upon Altair's patent for LED-driven replacement lighting for fluorescent lamps.

According to Bo Jiansheng, general manager of Philips Taiwan lighting, the market scale of the Taiwan street light market that is being converted to LED lighting applications is expected to exceed NT$1 billion (US$32.46 million), and the company has already gained some installation contracts from local governments in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.

Allegro MicroSystems has announced a new series of RGB multichip LED modules that provide a range of high-powered ALGaInP red, and InGaN green and blue LEDs that can be used in general lighting applications, amusement and gaming equipment, and for backlighting TFT displays. Each module combines eight LEDs in four or eight separate channels.

Cree has announced that Tiajin Economic Development Area (TEDA) has joined its LED City program. Mitsubishi Chemical Corp, a unit of Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corp, of Tokyo, Japan has agreed to acquire the near-ultraviolet LED business of Mitsubishi Cable Industries Ltd (including the facilities and the technology to produce the chips) at the end of March for ¥1.5bn (about $13.9m), reports Nikkei Net. The Mitsubishi Cable near-UV LED manufacturing operations in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture will be moved to Mitsubishi Chemical’s facilities in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture.

Strategies Unlimited predicts that the LED industry is emerging from a slow growth phase, and that the total market size in 2012 will exceed $11bn. According to a market update presented by Bob Steele at the 2008 Strategies in Light conference in Santa Clara, California, the market for packaged high-brightness LEDs is set to grow by 12% in 2008.
