European Patent Office Upholds Dow Corning’s LED Optical Silicone Encapsulants Patents

Dow Corning, a global leader in silicones, silicon-based technology and innovation, announced that the European Patent Office (EPO) rejected a request to revoke patent EP-1556443. The patent is part of the rich intellectual property (IP) portfolio that protects the company’s proprietary high refractive index (RI) phenyl-silicone-based optical encapsulant technology, which offers enhanced light output, improved reliability and other benefits for high-brightness LED lighting designs.  The EPO’s decision significantly strengthens Dow Corning’s IP position in Europe’s fast-growing LED lighting market where patent compliance is strategically important, as well as other key global LED manufacturing centers, such as the U.S., Japan, Korea and China.

With the domestic market approaching saturation, branded Chinese LCD TV vendors see overseas expansion as the only means to grow their market shares and raise their brand recognition. The latest example of this approach is the acquisition of the U.S.-based consumer electronics maker VIZIO by LeEco, a rising Internet brand in the Chinese LCD TV market. NEMA’s Business Conditions Indexes Continue Upward Climb in June

June marks the third consecutive month in which NEMA’s Electroindustry Business Conditions Index (EBCI) improved. The current conditions index increased from May’s reading of 53.3 to reach 59.4 in June. More respondents saw change in business conditions, for better or worse, than did so in May. Thirty-eight percent of respondents reported better conditions in June, up from only 20% of those responding in May while 19% indicated worse conditions, up from 13% in the previous month. Forty-four percent noted that conditions were unchanged this month, down considerably from the 67% reporting unchanged conditions in May.

On June 30, 2016, Seoul Viosys announced that the U.S. Federal District Court for the Southern District of Florida issued a judgment in favor of Seoul Viosys against Salon Suppl, a company that sells UV LED curing device (“Salon Supply”). In the judgment, Salon Supply acknowledged infringement of Seoul Viosys’s asserted patents as well as their validity. Salon Supply agreed to pay past damages, as well as a license fee, and to stop using unlicensed infringing products.
