Veeco to Focus on Process Equipment for the LED, Solar and Data Storage Markets

Veeco Instruments Inc. announced that it has agreed to sell its Metrology business to Bruker Corporation (Nasdaq: BRKR), a leading provider of high-performance scientific instruments and solutions for molecular and materials research, for $229 million in cash. AIXTRON’s Next Generation MOCVD tools to fill Sanan´s Wuhu fab

AIXTRON AG today signed a contract with Sanan Optoelectronics Co. Ltd., on the supply of a double digit number of multiple CRIUS® II and AIX G5 MOCVD systems. The AIXTRON new generation MOCVD systems will be delivered between the fourth quarter of 2010 and the first quarter of 2011 and installed at Sanan’s new manufacturing facilities in Wuhu, Anhui, China. Earlier this year Sanan had announced their plans to invest into China’s largest LED manufacturing and research centre capable of operating up to 200 MOCVD systems.

Compared with conventional vertical LEDs, a 21% increase in light output can be achieved in vertical nitride LEDs.

Korean MEST increased blue LED efficiency by 30%

According to a document from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to the APEC regional audience, the Korean innovation plan for LED had made a success that the next generation InGaN blue light's efficiency was increased by 30 percent. The document gives an outline of how the results were achieved. The results, in terms of technical details were said to be because of zinc oxide nanorod optical waveguide effects.

The University of Strathclyde exploits micro-LED arrays

Led by Braveheart Investment Group, the Strathclyde Innovation Fund and the Alpha EIS Fund has invested £150,000 to exploit micro-LED arrays developed at its Institute of Photonics. Scottish Enterprise's Scottish Seed Fund also joined them.   The arrays begin as a single large LED structure. MicroLEDs from 2 to 100µm across have been made.

AIXTRON AG today announced a multiple tool order from Sanan OptoElectronics Co. Ltd., headquartered in Xiamen, China. The Sanan order for multiple CRIUS® 31x2 inch tools was placed at the end of 2009. The local AIXTRON support team has successfully commissioned the new HB GaN LED growth reactors at Sanan’s new purpose-built facility in Tianjin in the first two quarters of 2010.

Xi An Zoomlight (ZoomView) orders AIXTRON CRIUS MOCVD systems for GaN HB-LED production

AIXTRON AG announced today a new order from an existing customer in China. The order is for two CRIUS production deposition systems in a 31x2 inch configuration. LED manufacturer Xi An ZoomView placed the order in the fourth quarter of 2009, and will use both reactors for GaN HB-LED production. The systems will be delivered over the second to third quarter period of 2010 with the local AIXTRON support team installing and commissioning the new reactors at the company’s new production facility.

Japan Develops Si-based LED Using Ge Quantum Dots

The Research Center for Silicon Nano-Science (SNS) of the Advanced Research Laboratories (ARL) at Tokyo City University developed a silicon-based LED. It is made by embedding Ge microparticles (quantum dots) with a diameter of several tens of nanometers to 100nm in the i-layer of a Si-based device with a pin structure. The university claims that the light emitting device will help realize a silicon (Si) photonics because it can be produced by using a manufacturing process compatible with a CMOS process and possibly is capable of laser oscillation.
