SEL and Sharp Unveil Prototype 8K OLED Notebook Panel

Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL), Advanced Film Device (AFD) and Sharp displayed a prototype 13.3-inch 8K (7,680 x 4,320-pixel) OLED display panel at SID 2014 in U.S., according to a report by Nikkei Technology.

The panel has a resolution of 663 ppi (pixel per inch), which was achieved by combining white-light OLEDs with three kinds of microcavities to narrow wavelengths to red, green and blue. Color filters were later applied. However, red color reproducibility has been low with a 84% or wider color gamut on NTSC standards, while many OLED panels have about 100% color gamut.
