WG Tech recently held an in-depth online discussion with Dr. Adi Abileah, former Chief Scientist at Planar Systems and a SID Fellow, to exchange insights on glass substrate based MiniLED technology innovation. Dr. Abileah, a globally respected authority in the display industry, has made landmark contributions to active-matrix LCD technologies, display optics, and international standards, leaving a lasting impact on the evolution of modern displays.

During the exchange, Dr. Abileah expressed strong recognition for WG Tech’s innovative system architecture combining 0OD (zero optical distance), glass substrate based MiniLED backlighting, and precision local dimming. He believes this approach has the potential to rival OLED in optical performance while offering clear advantages in cost efficiency.

As one of the few companies worldwide with full-process capabilities for glass-based PCBs, WG Tech has pioneered technologies spanning glass thinning, photolithography, micron-scale through-glass vias (TGV), and multi-layer circuit integration. These innovations power next-generation display solutions for glass substrate based MiniLED backlighting and MicroLED displays, and have already been successfully applied in flagship products from leading brands such as Hisense and Ledman.

Dr. Abileah’s observations on HDR contrast, angular light distribution, light leakage control, and luminance uniformity sparked valuable cross-functional discussions within the WG Tech team. A key focus was on achieving high ambient contrast ratio, during which WG Tech shared its integration of OC (Open Cell) Black Panel technology in current backlight designs. This technology, based on Negative-Type Liquid Crystal (N-LC) and combined with nano-structured anti-reflective coatings, enables ultra-high contrast, wide viewing angles, and extremely low reflectance to effectively reduce glare.

When combined with WG Tech’s glass substrate backlight featuring a high number of local dimming zones and precision light control, the overall system delivers a significant leap in display performance, narrowing the gap between MiniLED and OLED in both optical quality and cost efficiency.
Ultimately, this thoughtful combination of two innovative technologies represents more than the optimization of technical parameters. It is a redefinition of backlight engineering aesthetics and a breakthrough step toward next-generation display architecture.
