[News] Apple Debuts First Touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro; TSMC, Foxconn, Samsung in Supply Chain Spotlight

News Source:

Apple has unveiled a series of new products, including an OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro, an M6 MacBook Pro, an M6 iMac, and an OLED iPad mini, according to MacRumors. The OLED MacBook Pro marks the most significant upgrade, becoming Apple‘s first Mac with an OLED touchscreen. As noted by Commercial Times, the launches could create fresh opportunities for Taiwan’s Mac supply chain, with institutional investors expecting the new lineup to drive high-end replacement demand and potentially boost fourth-quarter orders and shipments for Taiwanese ODM partners Foxconn and Quanta.

Reuters adds that the launch marks a major shift in Apple’s long-standing opposition to touchscreen laptops, a feature already widely adopted by competing PC makers. However, the new OLED MacBook Pro comes at a premium. According to MacRumors, the 14-inch and 16-inch models start at US$2,899 and US$3,399, respectively, representing a US$400 premium over comparable mini-LED versions. Both models are scheduled to go on sale November 6. The Korea Herald notes that the higher prices come with a thinner, lighter design and touchscreen functionality, though it remains uncertain whether consumers will be willing to pay significantly more for OLED’s superior picture quality.

The pricing challenge comes as major PC ODMs remain cautious about the broader market outlook for the second half of the year. Persistently high memory and storage costs are putting upward pressure on notebook average selling prices (ASPs), constraining overall PC shipment growth, according to Commercial Times.

TSMC’s Advanced Nodes and Samsung OLED Supply in Focus
On the chip front, Apple’s new M6 marks its transition to 2nm, with MacRumors reporting that the chip is expected to use TSMC’s N2 process. Apple says the M6 delivers up to 30% faster graphics performance and 25% faster AI workloads than the M5. By contrast, the OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro uses the earlier M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, built on TSMC’s third-generation 3nm process, according to Notebookcheck.

Beyond processors, the new OLED MacBook Pro is also drawing attention to the display supply chain. Samsung Display has reportedly secured exclusive OLED panel supply for Apple’s 14-inch and 16-inch models, with industry estimates suggesting orders could reach approximately 2.5 million panels through 2027, according to The Korea Herald. Apple has also redesigned the MacBook Pro’s thermal system to direct heat away from the OLED display, while using its M5 chips to manage screen refreshes and reduce the risk of burn-in, Reuters adds.

Meanwhile, Apple’s Mac-related optical lens supply chain is also attracting interest. Institutional investors cited by Commercial Times expect stronger orders for new Mac models in the second half of the year to provide growth momentum for Taiwanese suppliers of notebook camera components.
