Intervew with William Lee, President of Kingsun Optoelectronics: Uniform LED street light standards should be established

With strong support from China’s government in several LED street lighting projects, the LED lighting market holds tremendous business potential in the country and abroad. At the 7th China International Exhibition And Forum on Solid State Lighting (CHINA SSL 2010), LEDinside recently interviewed William Lee, President of the leading LED lighting company Kingsun Optoelectronics Co., Ltd, to learn about the company’s production capacity and the progress of LED street light standards.

Kingsun’s expertise in LED street lighting

Kingsun Enterprise Co., Ltd was founded in 1993, and has been accumulating its experience and expertise in the lighting field since its establishment. In 1998, Kingsun entered the LED lighting field, and has been gaining expertise in the field for 16 years. In March, 2007, the company officially set up the packaging plant of LED lights, which further extended the photoelectric industrial chain based on the original lighting products. Mr Lee recounted, “after having overcome various challenges, Kingsun has now received high recognition in the China market with over 50% market share in LED street lighting.”
The company has over 200,000 units of high power lighting fixtures, such as street lighting, and tunnel lighting. Kingsun offers products with minimal light decay, high reliability and energy efficiency, and long lifetime.

Largest scale of manufacturing facility in China

To meet the high demand of LED lighting products domestically and abroad, Kingsun has a 300,000 square meter manufacturing facility, the largest solid state lighting manufacturing facility in Asia, with over 8000 employees. Currently, the company achieves an annual output of 100,000 units of LED lighting products. With the goal of increasing the figure to 600,000 units, Kingsun has made tremendous investments to expand its production capacity, and enhance its technological expertise.

Uniform LED street light standards should be established

When addressing the issue of different LED street light standards across different cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Xiamen, Lee explained that Kingsun participates in different rigorous testing procedures to ensure it product quality conforms to ISO9001:2000 Quality Management System; and most of Kingsun’s LED Lights and LED Street Light products have CE, RoHs and UL Certifications. In fact, Kingsun has received more than 100 patents (9 national patents, 16 utility model patents and 8 appearance patents) for LED lights and LED street lights. Furthermore, the Kingsun brand has been given the title of “Most Valuable LED Products Brand” by Guangdong Lighting Industry Association in 2007, as well as ‘Chinese Energy Saving Street Lighting Products’ in 2008. Lee added, at Kingsun’s manufacturing facility, after the LED packaging process is complete, quality control stations are set up for solving for each step of the process, including sampling, pilot run, and high volume testing. Additionally, strict light classification processes are carried out to ensure the consistency of color temperature and lumen output

To enhance the competitiveness of LED lighting manufacturers, Kingsun has proactively initiated the drafting of ‘Guangdong Province LED Street Light Standard’ which was approved and implemented in July, 2009. Devoted to ensuring high product quality, Lee remarked that Taiwan LED manufacturers have achieved excellent standards in the industry, and the company is seeking close cooperation with Taiwan LED manufacturers, specifically with MOCVD equipment makers and LED chip makers.

Commitment to ‘Energy Management Contract’

Addressing the company’s commitment in the “Energy Management Contract,” Lee emphasized that Kingsun is a low-carbon pioneer in LED illumination. In 3 years, Kingsun has achieved several “firsts” in the LED lighting industry, and has facilitated the transformation of the street light market, which had not been achieved before in China. The company is also involved in many street light projects with the government through the BT model.

Future developments and trends

Kingsun has used LED chips from the US chip makers, mainly Cree, as well as chips and wafers from China’s domestic LED chip makers. As Kingsun continues to engage in R&D to produce better and higher efficiency product, the company is seeking cooperation opportunities with Taiwan LED enterprises indefinitely. In terms of future market developments, Lee indicated that green illumination is a certain trend, and as a leading company, we have to focus on continuous innovation, investing in R&D to improve our products and achieve the goal of providing superior LED lighting products to the market.
