Another Partnership between Giant Tech Companies: TCL and Xiaomi Co-Establish a Joint Lab

On August 9, TCL and Xiaomi officially signed a partnership to build a joint laboratory, and they are set to hold its inauguration ceremony on September 29 in Wuhan. The joint lab will center on research projects of semiconductor display technologies, with the results being shared between the two businesses.

Reportedly, such an alliance between the two Chinese tech giants will help enhance TCL’s brand awareness and market share, while providing Xiaomi with advanced technologies to improve display performance and user experience of its smartphones. Therefore, a win-win situation is likely.

Notably, TCL and Xiaomi have long maintained a good relationship. Xiaomi has been a crucial partner of TCL in markets of small-, mid-, and large-size monitors, where the two co-developed a series of cutting-edge smartphones and laptops.

By utilizing their respective resource and technical advantages, TCL and Xiaomi—through the joint lab deal—are expected to comprehensively grow their business in the semiconductor display sector and claim higher shares in semiconductor display and consumer electronics markets.

In fact, TCL has cooperated with San’an Optoelectronics back in June 2020, where the two LED manufacturers established a joint lab specializing in R&D of Micro LED technologies and mass production of related products. The lab has developed several products including a 4-inch AM Micro LED monitor with IGZO glass substrate.

In the coming years, TCL is going to expand its “social network” in the semiconductor display sector. TCL is allegedly planning to build more joint labs with upstream and downstream suppliers, such as Longli Tech, Lenovo and Hisilicon, aiming to enhance its core competitiveness in the Chinese display industry.

Additionally, TCL has endeavored to establish strategic alliances with display-related enterprises (e.g., Leyard), focusing on resolving difficulties in production process of emerging displays like Mini/Micro LED. Such efforts have accelerated the application of advanced display technologies in China.

Predictably, TCL is striving for partnerships with leading players in chip, display module, monitor and consumer electronics sectors. The semiconductor display maker aims to gather strengths of industrial collaboration with upstream and downstream suppliers, thereby speeding up the industrialization of semiconductor display technologies in China. The collaboration also indicates that TCL will largely enhance its overall competitiveness and influence in the thriving semiconductor display sector.
