
Polar Light Technologies AB emerged from the extensive research of Professor Per-Olof Holtz and his team in semiconductors and optoelectronics at Linköping University. Their journey to develop a monolithic full-color began in 2014, ultimately leading to the discovery of their ideal solution: pyramidal InGaN-based structures. TrendForce recently had the opportunity to speak with Oskar Fajerson, CEO of Polar Light Technologies, who shared valuable insights into the microLED market and the company's latest advancements.


Currently, Polar Light Technologies is preparing pilot line production, utilizing InGaN materials to create their distinctive 5µm non-etching pyramidal microLED on CMOS. This innovative structure offers several advantages, including no etching, all three colors generated from InGaN quantum structures, easier integration with CMOS backplane and a narrow emission cone. Meanwhile their sub-Lambertian light-lobe optical solution achieves directional light at 58% ± 20 degrees, enabling efficient waveguide coupling.

As their initial step into the AR glasses market, Polar Light Technologies plans to begin monochrome green light display pilot line in Q4 2026. A solution to RGB on same wafer is ongoing, with the goal of launching a full-color product by 2028, in response to the prosperous AR glasses market demand happening by 2028, forecasted by TrendForce.
