TrendForce LiDAR Ushers an Incredible Era for Autonomous Vehicle and Smart City

According to the latest report by LEDinside, a research division of TrendForce, titled “2020 Infrared Sensing Application Market Trend- Mobile 3D Sensing, LiDAR and Driver Monitoring System”, the market value of automotive LiDAR is expected to reach USD 127 million in 2019. International sport events such as 2020 Tokyo Olympics and 2024 Paris Olympics are the best opportunities for hosting countries to demonstrate their transportation capabilities. Thus, they have proactively involved in Robo-Taxi, autonomous bus and even air taxi development.

“Currently, automotive LiDAR is used in autonomous bus, Robo-Taxi and passenger car. LiDAR has the advantages of long-range detection and high-depth resolution and is identified as the necessary sensor to achieve the autonomous driving L4 and L5.” said TrendForce Research Manager Joanne Wu.

In 2015-2019, autonomous buses have been operated in more than 15 countries and have reached autonomous driving L4 and L5. They are used as closed campus shuttles, point-to-point transports and city buses to solve the issues of manpower shortages while save personnel and transportation costs. LeddarTech is optimistic about the development of the autonomous bus market and believes that there will be 2 million autonomous buses operating across the world by 2025.

Passenger cars will officially enter autonomous vehicle L3 in 2020 and are expected to enter autonomous vehicle L4 during 2023-2025. SONY demonstrated BEV concept car Vision-S at CES 2020, which equipped with cameras, radars and LiDARs. It is believed that car makers and technology giants are planning to explore to new energy car and the autonomous vehicle market field to create new business opportunities.

Velodyne officially launched automotive LiDAR with a detection range of 300 meters in 2018 and 2019. The one with detection range of 500 meters is expected to be available in 2021. According to LEDinside’s interview, Velodyne believes that 2020 will be an incredible year, since ADAS as well as AV L4 and L5 on track.
