[Insight] Competition Among AR Displays Intensifies Due to Brands’ Strategies; LEDoS Penetration Expected to Reach 65% by 2030, Says TrendForce

TrendForce’s latest report, “2025 Near-Eye Display Market Trend and Technology Analysis,” reveals that the rapid expansion of AR strategies by leading brands such as Meta, Apple, Amazon, and RayNeo is speeding up across various display technologies. LEDoS and LCoS are emerging as the fastest-growing segments, with projected 2025 penetration rates of 37% and 7%, respectively, and expected to increase to 65% and 11% by 2030.

Chinese brands, now the main suppliers of AR glasses shipments, originally concentrated on viewing where brightness requirements are less stringent. As a result, OLEDoS, with its established manufacturing techniques and manageable costs, emerged as the dominant display option.

However, as the AR industry moves toward applications requiring higher brightness and increased light transmittance, brands are reducing investments in viewing-focused devices. OLEDoS adoption is projected to reach a peak of 53% in 2025, after then slowly decreasing.

TrendForce observes that demand for AI-assisted, information-centric AR glasses is expected to increase in the near term. To keep pace with fast industry cycles and speed up mass production, various players, including Chinese CSPs, software platforms, and traditional consumer electronics brands, are entering the AR market and joining the LEDoS ecosystem.

These companies utilize regional strengths in LEDoS R&D and manufacturing to rapidly develop products with single-green LEDoS microdisplays, which is expected to boost LEDoS adoption to around 37% by 2025. Additionally, many vendors are investing in full-color LEDoS, shifting their product strategies from simple hardware updates to more integrated hardware-software solutions.

In contrast, international brands—mindful of product positioning and the high cost of failure—tend to focus on full-color LEDoS solutions, which can lengthen the development timeline. However, once Apple, Meta, and Google bring full-color LEDoS devices into mass production, they are expected to drive LEDoS adoption sharply upward, pushing the penetration rate to 65% by 2030 alongside Chinese manufacturers.

LCoS continues to be appealing because of its technological maturity, affordable costs, and excellent power efficiency at high average pixel lit (APL) levels, which have attracted Meta’s interest. The rollout of Meta’s Ray-Ban Display Glasses is projected to increase LCoS market share to 7% by 2025, with potential for additional short-term expansion.

However, LCoS continues to encounter major challenges in scaling micro-optics, improving brightness, and enhancing contrast. Additionally, Chinese brands do not have significant competitive advantages in LCoS and have already invested heavily in LEDoS development, limiting their ability to redirect focus. Consequently, LCoS growth is expected to stay moderate, with market penetration reaching about 11% by 2030.
