Light and Building 2018: Mapping Out A Smart Living Environment

At Light and Building 2018, LEDinside also saw a great number of companies displaying other Smart Home/Building technologies. They delivered a message that they have confidence to transform our living areas into smart environments.

Z-Wave

As a wireless communication protocol, Z-Wave targets specifically at home automation. Developed by Zensys, a Danish company based in Copenhagen, the technology features low latency and is able to deliver a small amount of data with data rates of 100kbps at most. As it operates in the sub-1GHz band, it perfectly dodges interference from other technologies in the frequency range of 2.4GHz such as Zigbee and Bluetooth.

The Z-Wave alliance has up to 700 members and has certified 2,400 products that are interoperable. Currently, the number of installed devices connecting with the protocol has surpassed 94 million. The technology not only enables interoperability between products made by different manufacturers but forth and backwards compatibility between products of different generations.

MEAN WELL

MEAN WELL this year exhibited a series of products connecting with KNX, a communication protocol for building automation. The series included a 640mA power supply, a LED actuator/dimmer, and a KNX to DALI gateway. The power supply featured a compact size of 52.5mm and can be installed to control applications such as lighting, blinds and shutters, HVAC systems, security system, and energy monitoring and management systems. The KDA-64 KNX to DALI gateway is able to change commands from the connected KNX system into DALI signals, allowing devices speaking different protocol languages to talk to each other.

Delta

Delta showcased its integrated building automation and new IoT-concept lighting solutions. Apart from the solutions for office, commercial, industrial, and street lighting, the company also displayed advanced solutions that link its lighting products with other applications such as security & surveillance equipment, and building control systems.

It also demonstrated an in-house Bluetooth Mesh network communication module that can be integrated with Delta’s DALI power supply modules for digital lighting control via wireless Mesh networking. It can be easily put to use in conjunction with beacon indoor positioning technology, either on a mobile phone or a tablet, providing value-added services such as indoor positioning on top of its basic lighting function.
