This year, Touch Taiwan––a leading event for the display industry held in Taipei, Taiwan––focuses on six themes, namely display and solution, smart manufacturing, advanced equipment, industrial material, startup and circular economy. In addition to major players showcasing their latest Micro/Mini
LED displays with astonishing features (e.g., AUO, Innolux, PlayNitride and Ennostar), suppliers of equipment for critical processes such as mass transfer and mass repair as well as solution providers have exhibited products that can effectively help their clients save production time and cost.
Stroke PAE
Being an exhibitor at Touch Taiwan for the first time, Stroke PAE demonstrated its technological excellence in Mini LED by presenting equipment for processes including chip placement machine, laser bonding, laser rework and chip sorting. The devices boast high capacity (the chip placement machine, for example, can process up to 200,000 chips per hour), compatibility with small LED size (as small as 0204 mil), high accuracy (±10µm) as well as much better bonding yield compared to conventional swing-arm die bonders. Instead of following conventional solder-based processes, Stroke PAE has developed a unique laser bonding technique to ensure high speed, high accuracy and warpage-free processes plus desirable luminance consistency. The devices with different features aim to meet different customer needs, including those for COB, POB and COG chips with highly effective solutions.

Poro Technologies Ltd. (Poro Tech)
Poro Technologies (Poro Tech), a Cambridge-based tech pioneer specializing in Micro LED, demonstrated the world’s first native InGaN-based Red, Green and Blue Micro LED displays, including a native red InGaN display at 614-625nm wavelength, featuring a 1920 × 1080 resolution and ≥2M nits of brightness at Touch Taiwan 2022. The revolutionary approach proposed by the startup––which secured a $20M Series A investment in early 2022––enables simultaneous emission of R, G, B on a single InGaN material platform using its proprietary porous technology with no need to mix with other materials, thereby excluding the associated mass transfer issues faced with conventional QD and RGB processes. This game-changing technology, known as PoroGaNTM, simplifies the existing Micro LED process, representing a breakthrough to largely reduce manufacturing cost and a step towards the commercialization of Micro LEDs for AR near-eye displays and other small consumer electronics applications.

Contrel
Contrel presented its Micro LED mass transfer and repair (the CµL series) equipment boasting a final product yield of 99.999%. To overcome mass transfer and repair problems––currently the major challenges on Micro LED production––the equipment provider has developed the Micro LED Mass Transfer Master using its proprietary “optical coupling bonding” technology to simultaneously complete mass transfer and LED placement processes (per chip process time < 1ms), which can largely help reduce production time and cost. Contrel also focuses on Micro LED repair by providing combined solutions that can repair multiple defected LEDs at the same time, along with the “defected path metal repair” technology capable of forming low-resistance copper wires and repairing backplane defective wiring. Additionally, the company’s Mini LED repair devices come with an AOI system, which can accurately identify brightness defects on a large scale, with the repair time being only 10% of the existing repair technologies.

In summary, the Touch Taiwan exhibition this year saw equipment and solution providers showcase products that can effectively reduce the cost of Micro/Mini LED manufacturing plus higher efficiency, along with displays boasting upgraded specs achieved by major players. The efforts made by these exhibitors will accelerate the expansion of Mini LED markets and commercialization of Micro LED products.
